Whyser - Innovation Processes and Solutions
Innovation is the core element to sustain differentiated value creation in any Industry.
Although this statement is fairly indisputable, few companies will state that they address innovation in an organized and structured way. Most will end up admitting innovation is core to their company’s success but they fail to incorporate any methodologies to enhance value creation by capturing the innovation potential of their people.
A company aiming to achieve consistent innovation in its business should develop a robust process that generates a large scale of innovations in a continuous and recurrent way.
It all starts with top management clear guidelines to develop an innovation driven culture, but the efforts have to go beyond the will and simple statements.
We should identify what kind of innovation approach the company aspire to develop and structurally leverage the knowledge and the assets to a new level of value creation.
We can classify innovation in several ways; in a simplistic and pragmatic manner, there are two different types of innovation that require three different approaches:
Disruptive Innovation: is about creating a new market by allowing customers to address a need in a radical new way. It’s a rupture to what was being done and a complete brand new way of doing it. Is about changing the rules of a certain Industry or creating a new one. It’s about massive value creation due to unmatched competition.
Incremental Innovation: is about pursuing evolutionary gains in efficiency and effectiveness to marginally increase value creation. Is about doing better what is being done and better fitting customer needs with fewer costs. This incremental innovation approach might be developed in two different ways:
Wide open: Aiming to collect everybody’s ideas about any topic that might contribute do higher efficiencies or to better matching customer needs and having a process to funnel ideas from the generation through development to implementation;
Focused: Aspiring to drive people’s attention to a certain prioritized set of challenges and be very focused in improving those particular objectives and having a process to stimulate focused idea generation, development and implementation.
Each of these aspirations requires a different strategic approach and a different set of processes to be successfully implemented.
